The DHEA Enigma

Researching DHEA was quite an undertaking. There are so many opinions, studies and contradicting information, I did not know who to believe! Unless you are educated in micro-biology, chances are you would be as confused as I was as I read on and on about this esoteric hormone!

What I will tell you is my own experience with DHEA. Years ago I read about it  to help aid in depression and sexual libido. This piqued my curiosity , so I tried it. My depression lifted (not completely) my libido increased! I just felt an overall better sense of well-being. I have taken DHEA over the years. Until recently I ran out of DHEA, and honestly, I did not ‘get around’ to restoring my supply. I probably went about 3 weeks without DHEA. During this time I felt more depressed and unfocused. My libido was completely a no-show and I felt tired. Low and behold, I finally replenished my DHEA supply and within two days I have noticed myself being back to ‘normal’ with more energy and focus. I simply feel better! This is my experience, and I encourage anyone to do research for themselves, take information with a ‘grain of salt’ and form their own opinion, whether it be based on experience (trying a supplement) or just following your doctor’s advice. I hold this believe for all supplements. I do not believe a cure all or a one size fits all remedy. I read, keep an open mind and form my own conclusions. DHEA for me is a supplement my mind and body approve!
Here is what I found out about DHEA. I distilled all the facts I found to this blog entry for easier reading. I advise you to read more yourself or consult with your doctor if you are seeking more information.

DHEA is a steroid hormone made by the adrenal glands that acts on the body much like testosterone and is converted into testosterone and estrogen. DHEA and its sulfate (DHEAS) are abundant in the body, but their normal roles are not fully understood.

Depression: DHEA may play some role in protecting against depression. DHEA is a cholesterol metabolite, it aids in the relief of stress. Stress stimulates the body to secrete cortisol and DHEA, and increases the incidence of infectious diseases. DHEA interacts with serum cortisol to maintain a balance between them. A disturbance between the two can lead to stress disorders. During severe stressors, such as critical illness, cortisol is increased, and DHEA is suppressed. DHEA has an axiomatic effect on stress.
Cancer: DHEA aids in the prevention of cancer. Low circulating levels of DHEA have been associated with a higher incidence of breast cancer in women. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a naturally occurring steroid synthesized in the adrenal cortex, gonads, brain, and gastrointestinal tract, and it is known to have chemopreventive and anti-proliferative actions on tumors. These effects are considered to be induced by the inhibition of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and/or HMG-CoA reductase (HMGR) activities.
Anti-Aging: Another use for DHEA is for the purpose of the reversal of bodily aging. In elderly men and women, DHEA is thought to have anti aging effects on body composition, physical performance, insulin sensitivity and overall quality of life. As we age the levels of DHEA are reduced. Optimal levels are reached between the ages of 20 – 25. With each decade the levels of DHEA decline. This decrease in the levels of DHEA have been associated with many age related diseases and conditions. For example, individuals with low levels of DHEA suffer a greater incidence of immune dysfunction, autoimmune disease, heart disease, obesity, low libido, mental disturbances, and blood sugar instability. If this is the case, it makes sense to explore how taking DHEA supplements may be helpful to those wishing to remain strong and youthful. Again, relevant scientific studies have found there are not real evidences of these results in the aging population. Thus, the scientific community has not recognized DHEA as an anti aging substance.
Lupus: Helps control lupus flares; increases the blood level of DHEA. What we know: Natural DHEA levels have been found to be low in people with rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, particularly in post-menopausal women, as well as men with ankylosing spondylitis, perhaps due to corticosteroid use. DHEA may help regulate the immune system and control inflammation.
DHEA side effects: High doses taken for prolonged periods can lead to a number of side effects including acne, irritability, hair thinning, and heart rhythm disturbances, known as arrhythmias. We only sell 5 mg DHEA, not the higher amounts since we believe high doses are potentially dangerous.
