Using Protein Powder in Unusual Ways

I’m not a weightlifter or anything like that, but I do try to look for ways that I can get more protein into my diet because I’m a vegetarian. I discovered protein powder about seven years ago and it’s been a regular part of my diet since then. The usual way of using it is to mix it with water or to add it to a smoothie. While I do those things, I also wanted to find some different ways to use it.

After doing some snooping around online and some successful (and unsuccessful taste testing), I’ve found these things that you can do with protein powder.

Cookies. Put a scoop of protein powder into a bowl and add about a teaspoon of water–just a tiny amount. Mix it up–it will become a very sticky mess. Plop this ball on a plate and microwave for about 20-30 seconds and you’ve got yourself a cookie.

Protein ice cream. You need a special protein powder called Protein Freeze in order to do this, but you mix it up with water and a bit of fat and then put it in the freezer. The result tastes pretty similar to ice cream, though it’s not quite the same.

Pudding. When you make pudding–or just eating one of those cups of pudding–you can add protein powder to it. I find that a full scoop of powder is a bit much, but half a scoop works well.

Protein bars. Protein bars are awesome for after a workout or when you’re on-the-go and need a quick meal. You can make your own using protein powder. There are many different recipes for this, usually involving oats and nuts.

Breading. OK, I haven’t tried this, since I’m vegetarian, but apparently you can use the protein powder for breading your meat. Start with regular, unflavored protein powder and mix it with whatever spices you want. Then, dip your meat in this before you fry it.
