The Yohimbe tree is a tall evergreen that is native to western Africa. The principal alkaloid found in the bark of the of the West African evergreen Pausinystalia; contains a chemical called Yohimbine. The amount of Yohimbine found in dietary and weight loss supplements, in today’s marketplace; may vary.
Yohimbine has been used as both an over the counter dietary supplement, and also as a prescription medicine; for the treatment of sexual dysfunction. Although traditionally used in Africa as an aphrodisiac, one study found that oral Yohimbine supplementation may actuate significant fat loss; in athletes. When taken as a dietary supplement, the dried bark of the Yohimbe tree is used as a tea and ingested by mouth. In similar fashion, the desired ingredient of the bark is isolated and placed into capsules and tablets. As such, these weight loss supplements are exceedingly popular; in the diet and bodybuilding communities.
Yohimbine is a psychoactive drug (tryptamine chemical class) with stimulant and aphrodisiac effects, and has proven to be dangerous; if used in excessively. It has been determined that the range between an effective and dangerous dose; is very narrow. too large of a dosage can be harmful and toxic.
Significant side effects could include:
- rapid heart rate,
- high blood pressure,
- over stimulation,
- insomnia, and/or
- sleeplessness.
