It’S Hard To Get Huge In The North

It’s hard to get huge in the north! I had no idea what I was moving myself into when I packed up six garbage bags filled with everything that defined me as a person and traveled 3500 miles to my new home. I used to live near Toronto, the center of the universe! Everything is there, lots of gyms, clubs, Tim Horton’s, and the black market. You can get anything you want and have it that day. You don’t realize how easy everything is in today’s big cities until you move to little places like Whitehorse.

I live in the extreme northern parts of Canada and there is no bodybuilding heart beat here at all, until now. I have always been a yo-yo. Get huge, get lazy, lose it, repeat. It was completely reflective of my lifestyle. I never ate properly to grow, never slept enough or alone for that matter, and only trained the vanity parts. So, here I am at 28, new city and I do not know anyone. I have a great job and a great place to work, but where to workout? Whitehorse has basically two gyms, Better Bodies and Peak Fitness. My training partner and I train at Better Bodies. It’s a clean gym with everything you need and the staff is friendly. But, where are all the big guys!?!

The population of Whitehorse is 24,000ish and out of that 24,000 people there may be ten men that have decent physiques and actually train hardcore. That is .0004% of the population. My training partner and I are two of that ten. I am pretty sure that there are not 10 subscribers to Muscular Development in the entire Yukon! This is not a reflection of their publication, but that no one up here aspires to be Ronnie, Jay, or Victor. If you brought those names up people would think you were talking about daytime soap stars, not bodybuilders.

I am 30 today, 195 at 5’8” with 15% BF. My training partner Steve is 27, 5’5” at 190 with 12% BF. We are the biggest guys that workout in our gym! If we were walking into either the west or east coast Mecca’s or Metroflex, we would be Joe Nobody; up here we are Johnny Somebody! No one knows how to train and no one has any idea what gear is. There is no juice in the north, none! There is every other drug, but no sauce. We buy our supplements at Wal-Mart or at the grocery store, there are no supplement stores here either. Back home, everyone lifted heavy! Here, people seriously stop working out to watch Steve deadlift 405 or squat 315! Things really are different north of 60.

Steve and I are training for the Northern Classic, a bodybuilding show in Fort St. John B.C. next June. I doubt any websites will have contest pics up of this show, but if you did, you would see what I mean. It’s not easy to huge north of 60!
