Every sport or activity has its own set of terms & lingo. Here we explain the most common bodybuilding terms in simple easy explanations.

Pump
Pump is a state in which a body builder looks compact, terse and also feels that the muscle are fully succulent with blood. In a pumped state, the muscles of a body builder are fully engorged with blood. The pumped sate usually accrues when the body builder has been through a session of intense exercises. Body builders participating in a contest, usually lift some weights at the back stage before hitting the stage, so as to achieve this state. The practice is actually known as pumping weights.

Ripped
Ripped is yet another state or condition of the body. When a body builder is in a ripped state, he or she has extremely low levels of body fat in the physique. The low fat level is complemented by superior muscle group separation, definition and vascular. This is the most desired state of the physique, especially by competitive body builders prepping for an event. There are variations to this state, since some body builders and industry insiders refer to the state of being ripped to being sliced, being cut or even being cross-striated.

Shredded
This is also a state in which a body builder can be in, with regards to his or her physique. Being shredded means exactly the same as being ripped. To get shredded is to get ripped, to get sliced, to get cut or to get cross-striated. The state accrues when a body builder has extremely low levels of body fat while the muscles are intricately separated and or defined. ion. Also, sliced, cut, and cross-striated.

Pyramiding
Pyramiding is basically the act of a body builder increasing his or her weight poundage used during training, while simultaneously decreasing the number and speed of reps after each successive set. While a body builder may start with a ten-rep set using a 100lb barbell, he or she may decrease the number of reps to a minimum of two reps on the ninth set. But by the ninth set, he or she should also have successively added the training weight to an approximate poundage of 200lb. Now that is pyramiding, a core technique of maximal muscle stimulation in hardcore body building training.

Plates
Plates are basically the weights that body builders slip on to a dumbbell. The metal blocks are thin and circular in shape, weighing at specific poundage such as 45 pounds each. The smaller weights of similar build and shape weigh specific poundage of 25 pounds each, and are usually called quarters. We have even smaller weights called dimes and nickels, weighing 10 and 5 pounds, respectively. Combining these plates systematically allows a body builder to customary make a barbell weigh as much as he or she requires performing specific exercises.
Other basic terminologies prominent among body builders include reps and set. A Rep is a single complete movement during which a body builder moves the weight through a systematic full range of motion. When a movement goes to the full range of motion and then turns back to the starting position, that is what is called a single rep. One set usually incorporates several movements (reps) and therefore the term rep refers to such a single Repetition. One exercise usually involves several repetitions of the basic movement in good form.
A Set is the single unit of measurement a body builder adopts for a particular exercise, to constitute the number of reps (movement repetitions) necessary to achieve maximal fatigue of the muscles. Several reps usually comprise a single set.
