“More protein you take more muscle you will get”. – Fact?!
To some degree this is true, your muscle tissue needs protein to function properly. Protein allows your
body to restore muscle tissue after it has been “damaged” by weight lifting or other activities leading to development of thicker
muscle tissue giving you more muscle mass.
How much protein your body needs depend on your training routine and your body mass but in general for a
normal person is from 0.9g to 1.3g per kilogram of body mass. For bodybuilders that number can rise up to 3g
per kilogram of body mass.
Taking supplements can cover your protein needs, but there is no need in overeating to get more protein in your body. Protein is being digested and transformed in aminoacids and nitrogen, which are essential elements for proper muscle function.
If there is too much aminoacids they are transformed into carbon hydrated, which may lead to overweight issues.
You body can absorb around 20-40g of protein per meal, meaning that if you eat more than 50g of protein in
one moment your body wont necessarily use all 50g. Eating too much protein will not help you gain muscle mass either,
but will only “help” you gain body fat.
When calculating your protein needs, you also need to ratio your carbon hydrate and protein intake, optimal is
about 3:1, carbon hydrates:protein.
What is better? – protein supplements or normal food? Supplements can give your body all the aminoacids fast.
That is why protein supplements are used directly after workout to help you restore you muscle cells right when they need it the most. But that
does not mean that there is no need for normal food, supplements are really efficient, only and if, your diet is in order.
