Natural Living Vs. Natural Dying

Natural Living vs. Natural Dying

“Every man dies. Not every man really lives.” -Mel Gibson as William Wallace in Braveheart

There is much talk in the health world about what “natural living” is. Many believe ancient Chinese medicine is natural living, and swear by those practices. If natural living and medicines are from the East, then Western medicine, by definition, is all medical progress via technology and chemistry. Some doctors denounce any “natural medicines” and are quick to prescribe drugs to patients without acknowledging the consequences and informing the patient about the chemicals about to be put in their body. One need not look very far to find a story of how parents let their children die because they did not opt for “Western” medicine. So it appears to be a showdown of East vs. West. New vs. Old. Right? Wrong!

There is a common misunderstanding about what natural medicine and natural living actually is. At Best Supplement Guide, we define “natural” as living in harmony with the body, instead of in contrast to it. There is nothing new under the sun. Opium is as “natural” as green tea. Most pharmaceuticals are derived from some sort of plant or mineral that is from nature. While Western medicine is synonymous with state-of-the-art hospitals, technology, and drug prescriptions, it is also synonymous with heart disease, obesity, and osteoporosis. Western medicine is also notorious for prescription drug-related deaths. Although life and death are both natural, we prefer life. Best Supplement Guide believes that “natural” living is a combination of modern medicine, exercise, and, of course, supplements that are backed by science. These practices, so long as they allow one to live in harmony with the body, fit into the category of natural living. When one lives in harmony, life can be experienced to its fullest!

Where are my ECA and Phen Phen? Where’s the honest information?

Now that we understand what “natural” includes, let’s make some distinctions and show what is not included in natural living. Take for example one of my clients who asked why we do not promote the ECA (ephedrine, caffeine and aspirin) for fat loss. “After all, aren’t these ‘natural compounds’?” he asks. My answer was “No.” Although many bodybuilding sites and steroid forums promote compounds that do work, they are not designed to allow the user to be in harmony with themselves. Caffeine has long been proven to aggravate conditions such as arthritis, diabetes and insomnia. Ephedrine has shown to be effective in fat loss, however many athletes have died from heart attacks while being on the substance. Aspirin has been promoted as “heart-healthy” for its blood thinning properties, yet it aggravates ulcers, causes gastro-intestinal problems, and even can bring on a fatal condition called Reye’s Syndrome. Reye’s Syndrome is a two-phase illness, like the flu, which affects all organs of the body, but most lethally the liver and the brain. It causes a fatty liver, and severe encephalopathy—brain swelling. Aspirin, caffeine and ephedrine are not “natural” substances by our definition.

The Importance of Harmony in the Body

The body should be allowed to heal itself rather than be dependent on chemicals. The body likes to be in a state of harmony. Natural living provides this. However, too many people are taking prescription drugs only to be told they need another drug to combat the side effects of the previous one. The cycle continues for years until we reach a point in society where we are comfortable taking part in the prescription drug culture. This is a culture where kids are prescribed Ritalin at an alarming rate—a culture where people are dependant to anti-depressants to get through the day. With this in mind, Best Supplement Guide believes in promoting products and ideas that allow the body to live in harmony, rather than relying on a drug and dealing with the consequences. Fish Oil instead of statin drugs. SAM-e and meditation rather than Prozac.. CLA and Green Tea Extract rather than ECA. Glucosamine and MSM rather than Humira and methotrexate. Substances exist that allow the body to heal itself and experience little, if any side effects.

Critique of the Supplement Industry

Unfortunately, there have been too many abuses of the supplement industry, which have caused the consumer to doubt the effectiveness of “natural” products. Big advertising backed only by lousy formulations and the desire to cut costs has led to a billion dollar industry that has not always produced the best products for the consumer. Best Supplement Guide acknowledges there is confusion and aims to help people navigate through the sea of supplements to find products that can help change lives. We have personally tried and reviewed the scientific literature on all the products and compounds we recommend. Our reviews are legitimate and honest. We only recommend products that have worked for not only ourselves, but others as well.
