The Top 10 Trends In Fitness For 2011

Here is a quick breakdown of the top 10 trends in fitness and exercise for 2011.  This article has been written by Andre Farnell CSCS a fitness professional with over fifteen years of experience as a personal trainier & fitness expert. Inventor of Better Body In A BoxTM workout card series, Writer for bodybuilding.com, Owner and operator of Better Body Expert LLC a mobile personal health and fitness business in the Greater New York Metro area. These trends have been chosen by an industry professional based on his own foresight as a professional and the experiences of other experts in health and fitness field.  They have been combined to giving you an unique insider view into what is going on in fitness in 2011.

TOP 10 FITNESS TRENDS IN 2011

1. Holistic approach to fitness There will be a resurgeance in looking at fitness from a more total point of view.  As people become more educated about fitness and health people are starting to notice the connections between mental wellbeing, nutrition, Immune system health, stress management, sleep, lifestyle and spiritual state. In response there will be further emphasis on balance on home life, worklife and time spent taking care of ones self.  People willl incorporate more than just one type of physical activity to stay in shape.

2. Boot Camp/Group Classes You can expect for bootcamps and group classes to remain popular.  There is a real comradery that is formed in these classes that give people a sense of belonging and motivating people to adhere to a fitness routine.

3. Increase in Personal Training Programs People who really want/need results and want motivation & professional help will now be turning to the assistance of a personal trainer.  This once thought of luxury will become more common place as people realize that the gym has failed them in the battle against obesity. People are realizing now that you have to actually go to the gym for it to work and they have been kidding themselves saying that they will go. More people will put their money where they mouths are in 2011 and pony up the bucks to get fit.  There are statistically more gyms in America than ever before in history yet obesity remains at an all time high.

4. Functional Multi-joint training More and more people are becoming aware of the benefits and functionality of using many joints at one time during exercise. People looking to burn the most calories in the shortest amount of time while training the body in the manner in which we live work and play will take on this relatively “new age” method of training.  Look to see expansion of workout programs such as kettle bell training “Crossfit”, “TRX” and “MMA” training in 2011.

5.Active Video Game and Virtual fitness Nintendo Wii and just recently Playstation and  Xbox 360 has followed suit by incorporating motion sensor technology into gameplay for gamers to get up and move. No more sitting down still with controllers and playing games.  This trend will continue to pick up in 2011 with titles such as “Dance Revolution”, “Wii Fit” and “EA Sports Active”.  This form of virtual activity is beneficial for both children and adults.

6. Hotels and Corporate Fitness Many hotels are catering to the demands of fitness oriented guests, not only are they supplying gyms but many hotels have created exercise and fitness amenities for health conscious guests.  Affinia Hotels has an “Experience Kit” that is stocked with yoga DVD’s a yoga mat and a sweat towel.  More and more companies will increase their efforts to create the fittest employees in order to save on healthcare and ultimately effect their bottom lines.

7. HIIT Training High intensity interval programs like “P90X”, “Insanity” , “Turbulance Training” and the “Tabatta Method”will  still reign supreme. These workout programs are very intense, yield results and do not take a long to complete. These programs are perfect for time conscious individuals.

8. Post Physical Therapy Training In recent years there has been a great demand for post rehab professionals.  Qualified professionals who help the injured to regain their strength and also become stronger than they were before they were injured. This will become more evident in 2011 and years to come. Not only is there a need for people to return to daily activity but the need for people to be in a stronger state than before they became injured is key to overall quality of life..

9. Myofascial Release Techniques Mainstream society is becoming more aware of the importance of recovery, stretching and relaxation after exercise and life situations.  You can expect a rise in sales of foam rollers, rolling sticks and other stretching apparatus as people become more and more interested in finding relief from everyday aches and pains.

10.Toning Body wear Absolutely not recommended by this fitness professional but I do predict that Companies will make a killing misinforming the public about the miniscule benefits of wearing shoes with a rounded bottoms and shirts and pants that “slim”.  People will flock to these items looking for an easy way out as opposed to taking on diet and exercise in their various forms.  Fitness professionals the world over will be there to pick up the excess pounds and physical ailments caused by this new wave phenomena.

These are the ten trends that I see taking over in 2011.  Not all of them are the perferred method of becoming fit, but you will notice them next year as America gears up for the “New Year, New Body” kick off that lasts the first few weeks of the year then fades away. Hopefully you will not be a casualty of the 2011 resolution crew in February.  I recommend that you try as many new training techniques, sport and exercise modalities as possible.  Newbys start slow and progress and exercise vets add in something new to the mix to keep it fresh and sexy. I welcome the new exercisers young and old & commend the old veterans of the gym track, studios and wherever it is that you go to move.  Consider yourself informed
